HP beats Moore's Law with new chip architecture

Wednesday, 17 January 2007
A number type of nano-scale architecture developed in the research labs of Hewlett-Packard could beat Moore's Law and advance the progress of of microprocessor development three generations in one hit. The new architecture uses a design technique that will enable chip makers to pack eight times as many transistors as is currently possible on a standard 45nm field programmable gate array (FPGA) chip.
Currently, conventional FPGA chips use between 80 and 90% of their CMOS silicon for signal routing wires, leaving a relatively small amount for logic processing transistors. However, researchers Greg Snider and Stan Williams of HP Labs have developed a way to remove the signal routing wires from the silicon, leaving more room for logic processing transistors.
The new technique uses an architecture called “field programmable nanowire interconnect (FPNI)” which replaces the current signal routing with a crossbar made up of super thin 15nm wires which sits on a layer above the silicon-based transistors to route the signals.
The researchers, who have constructed tests using 17nm wires, say that using a cross bar with 15nm wires on FPNI architecture would enable eight times as many transistors to be housed on a 45nm chip without needing to shrink the size of the transistors.
“The expense of fabricating chips is increasing dramatically with the demands of increasing manufacturing tolerances,” said Snider, senior architect, Quantum Science Research, HP Labs. “We believe this approach could increase the usable device density of FPGAs by a factor of eight, using tolerances that are no greater than those required of today’s devices.”
What's more, the new architecture would use less power than chips today, say the researchers.
According to the researchers, by 2020 using 4.5nm wires it should be possible to pack in the same amount of transistors in a space of just 4% of what is currently possible on a 45nm chip.

Check the Scariest Technologies of 2006 ... worth a reading ...
http://money.cnn.com/popups/2006/fortune/scary_tech/
Whats next to watch for in 2007 ...
The Wars:
Is the Linux Vs Windows over? Solaris 10 Vs Windows Vista ... Whos the winner?
Java:
What is new with Java? Does .NET giving it a strong competition in web world?
2007 will be the year for Microsoft. MS always ready to grab every market they can ... Now it is to play the biggest bets ... The Internet war with Google ... Free Web Applications and Ads ... Web OS ... In a small time the Search giant Google has given MS a real hard time with its concept of web workplace(webtop) for users ... where MS had always relied on its proprietary desktop applications ... Releasing Windows Vista and Office 2007 at the same time, MS is trying to surprise the tech world. But living to its reputation MS, giving the buggiest softwares to market, it is struggling on security and initial adoption ... MS has hurried upon releasing and given some half cooked softwares it seems ... the service packs will be on its way soon, a tradition of MS softwares what they called support (my windows directory keep increasing on application of service packs!!!) ... MS softwares may not add noticeable features but will improve on graphics and system requirements for sure ... new versions always give the hardware market a push ... Vista requires more memory, more processor speed, more processors, more disk space more more more ... Windows security has been always a joke to hackers and it will be ... Office 2007 becomes flashy and heavy ... MS is building Live services as a competing platform for Google services ... What MS is good at are Replicating its rival technology and adding some more user friendly features ... Graphics in any windows software and Windows itself been a primary goal for MS developers ... Take Zune, it is by features no where better than iPod but it tries to boost on the bigger screen (Seeing video in Zune/iPod :O who wants to!!! ... How many times we share music between music players). Then XBOX, it is inferior to PS3 in processing power, memory but try to be better in online playing, package contents ...

Whats next to watch for in 2007 ...
The Wars:
- XBOX 360 Vs PS3 where Wii wins :D
- Zune Vs iPod
- Blue Ray Vs HD
- Windows Vista with itself :P
- Replacement for Desktop Apps - Like Google Spreadsheets
- AJAX - Is it going to be the defacto standard?
- SOA - Can everything can be modeled as Service?
Is the Linux Vs Windows over? Solaris 10 Vs Windows Vista ... Whos the winner?

Year after Year ...
2006 was quite a year for me ... actually like all other years of my life :D ... this time, outside India trying to realize my technical dreams ... opening a new world to explore ... now the amount of places I have already traveled in USA might exceed whatever I seen in India ... I am a traveling freak ... never like to get stuck in a single place for long ... stereotype life kills me, routines bore me ... so got a camera ... got some travel enthusiast ... and started rambling around USA ... also got lots of friends to chat share and party ... Actually I often felt to be in India ...2007 needs a so called new view on life ... I missed a big part called driving in my trips ... USA is good place to drive safely it seems ... so have to work on getting a driving license ... and drive to the mountains, beaches ... next I miss my trekking days ... have to start some adventure activities here ... Also I got detached from my programming habit ... I love coding or designing new systems/softwares ... But unfortunately been in some crap, working on stupid automation, mindless testing ... have to find some interesting work ...

Random Random
Didn't wrote much recently. So thought of writing something really random ... like ...Indian cricket team is on a loosing spree ... Greg is really making Indian team for 2007 ... last time the team which gave Australia a hard time is India. It chased Australia to the finals. But this year that might not happen ... Greg Chappell is making all efforts on behalf of Australia :P ...
I saw a topic "who is the best captain ... Ganguly or Dravid?" Well is there any base for this comparison ... Ganguly is the best ... Dravid is a important batsman for India, mainly in test cricket ... why wasting him like this ... it is quite visible that he is struggling ... What is Greg doing with the team is not very clear ... he is supporting a non-performing player like Sehwag, misused and spoiled bowlers like Pathan & Harbhajan ... he should be terminated immediately ... People might think I am supporting Sourav as a bengali sentiment but please analyze the facts before you say ... Sourav is still a very important batsman and captain in One-days ... We lost the ideal combination of coach-captain ... Sourav-Wright ...
Next the current quota system in India ... Why this is being dragged for so long ... I think quota system should be in limits ... spanning a 10-15 years only ... unless it looses it importance ... the definition of backward class is becoming vague ... Political parties are just trying to win votes on this issue ... they are not concerned about its applicability and effect ... this system came to existence for helping backward classes as they were most under the poverty line ... now the situation is not the same ... there are still people under poverty line who doesn't have enough food, clothes, land for living ... they need help ... now there are many who doesn't fall into backward class also ... what about them ... they should also get benefits of the quota system ... why families of backward class who are earning good now still receive the benefits ... the quota system should work for poor people who needs help ... and quota system should never compromise with merit, skill ... it should never work against competition ... the classification of people is a curse in Indian society ... we always find a way to classify people in any way ... The real poor people never gets the money or opportunities because they are not educated enough to understand their rights ... we all know about the corruption in politics ... money doesn't reach to the grass level ... quota system should be retired now ... or the so called general class will be the same as the backward class when the quota system started long ago ... people should be selected by skill, merit testing by a fair evaluation system ... these politicians will be doing the same with the women's bill .... there will be no logic, facts behind it only number of votes matter ... we should consider people equal first to create equal opportunities rather than creating classes ... first everyone needs education ... but a hungry, homeless person can't be educated ...
